High frequency recommended vocabulary
ITU-T K.21 specifies the resistibility requirements for telecommunication equipment installed in customer premises. The document is the complement of the recommendation for central office equipment, but the conditions it addresses are different and generally more severe: customer premises equipment is installed at the end of the subscriber line, where the cable runs outdoors and may be routed overhead, where the earthing is less well controlled and where the building wiring may be close to power circuits. The equipment also has a metallic connection to the public network while being connected to the local mains supply, so that a fault in the supply can drive a large current through the network interface. The recommendation defines the test levels and the waveforms applied to the network port, to the mains port and between ports, covering both the impulse conditions that represent lightning and the power frequency conditions that represent contact with or induction from power lines, and it specifies the test procedure and the criteria for a satisfactory result. It includes simplified requirements for equipment that is only lightly exposed.
