The current edition of the Chinese military standard for fuze testing reflects a change that has taken place in fuzing practice rather than a change of principle in testing. As electronic fuzes and electrically initiated devices have replaced mechanical ones, the electromagnetic part of the qualification has become the critical part: a fuze now contains sensitive electronics and a firing circuit, so the tests that establish its resistance to electrostatic discharge and to radio frequency exposure determine whether it can be handled, stored and installed in the vicinity of transmitting equipment with an acceptable level of risk. The mechanical and climatic methods of the earlier edition remain, since a fuze must still survive shock, vibration, thermal cycling and humidity, but the acceptance criteria for the electrical methods have been tightened. The document is applied in the qualification of fuzes for Chinese military procurement.
