ISO 10605 specifies the test methods used to evaluate the immunity of road vehicles to electrostatic discharge. Because a vehicle accumulates charge as it moves and because an occupant can carry several kilovolts when leaving the seat, discharge events occur in service at the moment a person touches the body, the door handle or a switch, and inside the vehicle when a passenger reaches for a control. The standard therefore defines two distinct levels of testing. At vehicle level, discharges are applied to the exterior of a complete vehicle and to the interior at points a person can actually touch, using a generator that represents the human body with a specified capacitance and series resistance. At component level, the modules and sensors used in the vehicle are tested with generators that model the different contact paths, including the unpowered handling case. Test severity levels are expressed as voltages, and the standard prescribes the test setup, the ground plane, the discharge tips and the criteria for judging performance.
