QC/T 727 is the Chinese automotive industry standard for the instruments fitted to automobiles and motorcycles, and it is cited by domestic vehicle manufacturers in the specifications they issue to their instrument suppliers. A modern instrument cluster is no longer a set of moving coil meters but an electronic assembly containing a processor, a display, a communication interface to the vehicle network and often a wireless module, and the recent editions of the standard have extended the requirements accordingly: in addition to the traditional checks on indication accuracy, on the behaviour over the temperature range and on mechanical endurance, the standard now sets requirements for immunity to electrostatic discharge and to conducted interference on the supply, so that the instrument continues to indicate correctly while the electrical system of the vehicle is disturbed. The standard is administered within the Chinese automotive industry rather than the national standards system, and its requirements are commonly supplemented by the customer's own specification.
