The European edition of the residential generic immunity standard is the fallback that a manufacturer uses when the product is unusual or newly developed and no dedicated product or product family immunity standard covers it, yet the CE marking must still be supported by a presumption of conformity with the EMC Directive. It is commonly applied to small electrical products, lighting, household equipment and general apparatus, and its levels reflect an environment in which the product is used in a dwelling, a shop, an office or a workshop supplied from the public low voltage network. Because it is a generic standard, it does not define new test methods: it selects the relevant port-by-port tests from the basic immunity publications and states the level for each, and it requires the manufacturer to identify the ports the product presents and to record why each clause was applied or omitted. That test plan, rather than the standard itself, is the document a market surveillance authority examines.
