EN 300 340 is an ETSI standard specifying the electromagnetic compatibility conditions for paging receivers operating in the European Radio Message System. A paging receiver is a particularly demanding case for an EMC standard: it is a small, battery-powered device containing a sensitive radio receiver, it is carried on the person and therefore exposed to electrostatic discharge from clothing and to being placed near other electronic equipment, and its entire function is to detect a weak signal in the presence of whatever interference happens to be present. The standard identifies the ports of the receiver, selects the applicable emission and immunity requirements from the common EMC series and defines the additional conditions that follow from the way the device is used, including operation on a battery rather than on the mains and the reception of a message while the equipment is disturbed. The test arrangements and performance criteria for a paging receiver are given.
