The European edition of the electromagnetic compatibility standard for measurement, control and laboratory equipment is a product family standard, which means that it displaces the generic standards for every product within its scope: laboratory instruments, industrial process measurement and control apparatus, electrical test and measuring equipment and their accessories. That hierarchy matters for the technical file, because a manufacturer who applies the generic standard to equipment that falls within this family has not used the correct route. In Europe the standard is issued in several parts, with the industrial and the sensitive equipment cases treated separately and with a further part for in vitro diagnostic medical devices, and the part applicable to the product must be identified before testing begins. Because the equipment concerned is used to measure, the acceptance criteria are expressed in terms of the change produced in the measured value, so the manufacturer must state the performance criterion for each function in the test plan.
