The European edition of the electrostatic discharge immunity test is cited in the technical file of an extraordinary range of products, because the phenomenon it covers occurs constantly in ordinary use: an operator walking across a synthetic floor, a passenger leaving a car seat, a user touching a metal connector. In the European system the test is rarely applied on its own; the harmonised product standards call it up and fix the level appropriate to their product group, among them the multimedia equipment standard, the household appliance standard, the measurement and control equipment standard and the railway standards, so the first task for a manufacturer is to establish which of them governs the product. The European text reproduces the international method, with contact discharge at 2 kV to 8 kV and air discharge at 2 kV to 15 kV, and it carries an annex and a foreword that state the date from which the superseded edition ceases to give presumption of conformity, which is the point at which an existing report must be renewed.
