The European edition of the common-mode disturbance test in the band from zero to 150 kHz addresses a range that European transmission and distribution practice makes important: the earth system carries the return current of every electrified railway, tramway, welding plant and large rectifier installation, and equipment connected to that system can be disturbed by voltages for which no other immunity test provides. The test is called up by the substation automation standards, by the standards for railway fixed installations and by the generic industrial immunity standard, which fix the level from the installation concerned. The European text reproduces the international continuously operating source and the coupling arrangements for d.c. power, a.c. power and signal ports, and it carries the foreword and annex that connect it to the directive. Because the disturbance is continuous, the acceptance criterion is normally a maximum permitted measurement error rather than a performance class.
