The European standard for the electromagnetic compatibility of residual current operated protective devices addresses a narrower subject than most EMC standards and one where both failure directions are unacceptable. A residual current device exists to disconnect the supply when a fault current flows to earth, so it must keep working in the presence of the disturbances found in an ordinary installation; but it must equally remain immune to disturbance that would cause it to trip with no fault present, because nuisance tripping leads in practice to the protection being bypassed. The standard therefore differs from an ordinary immunity standard in the way it expresses the acceptance criteria: rather than a performance class, it states limits on the change in the residual operating current and on the residual non-operating current under each disturbance, and it covers the effect of surge currents, of conducted and radiated radio frequency disturbance and of the magnetic fields present near the device. It is applied alongside the product standard for the device itself.
