The Chinese general safety standard for household and similar appliances is the base document of a large family of part 2 standards, each of which adds the requirements for a particular kind of appliance, exactly as the international standard does, and it is through that family that compliance is established in China. Its practical importance lies in the compulsory certification system: most household appliances are within the scope of the China Compulsory Certification, so a product may not be sold or imported without a certificate, and the electrical safety tests required to obtain that certificate are those specified by this standard and the corresponding part 2 document. The electroacoustic and electromagnetic aspects are handled by separate Chinese standards applied within the same certification. A foreign manufacturer therefore needs, in addition to a safety report, a certification application supported by a factory inspection carried out in China.
