Standard 14269 is an electromagnetic compatibility requirement of the engine manufacturer Cummins and applies to the electronic control units and sensors associated with its engines. The position of an engine control unit in the electrical architecture makes the requirement distinctive. The unit is mounted on the engine itself, in the hottest and most vibration-prone position in the vehicle, and it is connected by a long harness both to the sensors distributed over the engine and to the vehicle electrical system, so the coupling paths that reach it are numerous and the disturbance generated by the injectors, the ignition system and the alternator is close by. The same engine may be installed in several different vehicles, so the requirement tends to be written to a level that is adequate for the most exposed installation rather than tailored to one machine.
