IEC 61000-4-29 specifies the immunity tests for voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations on d.c. input power ports. While the a.c. versions of these phenomena are well understood, equipment powered from a d.c. source such as a battery, a telecom rectifier or a d.c. distribution bus faces an equivalent set of disturbances that is often more severe. A dip occurs when a heavy load is switched on or a fuse operates, an interruption when the supply is transferred to another source or a protective device opens, and a voltage variation when a battery discharges or a generator slows down. The standard defines the preferred test levels as percentages of the rated d.c. voltage together with the durations, the permitted rise and fall times and the repetition rate, and it distinguishes between dips and interruptions that start from the nominal voltage and variations that change the supply slowly. Requirements for the test generator, for the measurement of the applied voltage and for the monitoring of the equipment under test are given, and acceptance is based on the functional criteria declared by the manufacturer.
