High frequency recommended vocabulary
IEC 61000-4-8 specifies the immunity test in which a power frequency magnetic field is applied to equipment. The field is the one that exists in any installation where current flows in conductors: near transformers, reactors, busbars and cables carrying large currents the magnetic flux density can reach values that will disturb the operation of cathode ray tubes, Hall effect sensors, magnetically sensitive transducers and even the switching thresholds of some integrated circuits. The standard defines the reference field, which is continuous or short duration at 50 Hz or 60 Hz, and specifies the coil systems used to generate it: the Helmholtz coil for equipment whose largest dimension is smaller than the coil diameter, the induction coil for small enclosures, and the rectangular double coil for large equipment such as switchgear cubicles. It states the field strength levels from 1 A/m to 100 A/m that correspond to the different classes of installation, explains how the field is measured and how uniformity is verified, and defines the orientation of the equipment within the field and the duration of application. Performance is assessed against functional criteria.
