IEC 61000-4-11 specifies the immunity tests for voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations on the a.c. power port of equipment drawing up to 16 A per phase. These phenomena are the most common cause of misoperation and data loss in electronic equipment connected to a public supply: a dip occurs when a distant fault or a heavy load start-up pulls the supply voltage down for a few cycles, an interruption when a switching operation removes it entirely, and a voltage variation when the supply gradually rises or falls outside the steady-state tolerance. The standard defines the preferred test levels in terms of the residual voltage expressed as a percentage of the nominal value, together with the durations, the number of repetitions and the transition time between the nominal and the dipped voltage, and it carefully distinguishes dips beginning and ending at a zero crossing of the supply waveform from those at an arbitrary phase. Generator requirements, voltage measurement and the way the equipment is connected and monitored are all prescribed. The standard is paired with Part 4-34, which applies the same phenomena to higher-current equipment.
