IEC 61008-1 contains the general rules for residual current operated circuit-breakers without integral overcurrent protection, known as RCCBs, used in household and similar installations. The device is one of the principal means of protection against electric shock: it continuously compares the current flowing in the live and neutral conductors and disconnects the circuit when the difference, which represents current flowing to earth through a person or a fault, exceeds the rated residual operating current. The standard defines the classification of RCCBs by the behaviour of the residual current, by the time delay, by the method of operation, by the number of poles and by the kind of construction, and it fixes the preferred values of rated current, rated residual currents of 10 mA to 500 mA and rated residual making and breaking capacities. The type tests are comprehensive and include verification of the operating characteristics at each of the residual current values, the measurement of residual current without trip, the test of the residual non-operating current at different waveform, temperature rise, dielectric properties, mechanical and electrical endurance, the behaviour in the presence of surge currents, and the resistance to unwanted tripping from impulse voltages.
