IEC 61000-4-5 is the basic standard for immunity to unidirectional surges, the high-energy transients caused by lightning strikes on or near an installation and by the switching of power system equipment. It defines a combination wave generator that produces a 1.2/50 microsecond open-circuit voltage and an 8/20 microsecond short-circuit current from the same source, so that the energy delivered to the equipment depends on the impedance presented at the port. The standard specifies the coupling and decoupling networks used to apply the surge to a.c. and d.c. power ports in line-to-line and line-to-earth configurations, and the networks used for unshielded outdoor signal and telecommunication lines, where the generators are combined with series impedance and protective components to simulate the behaviour of the line. Test levels range from 0.5 kV to 4 kV for power ports and are selected according to the environment and the installation class. The procedure defines the number of surges, the phase angles at which they are applied, the repetition interval and the criteria for assessing performance.
